EU supports Guyana’s BioPark to boost medical research, biotechnology

The European Union (EU) is supporting the development of the Guyana BioPark, an initiative aimed at strengthening medical research, biotechnology and pharmaceutical development through partnerships between Guyana and Europe.
The project, signed in April 2026, is being undertaken in partnership with the Health Ministry and Belgium’s BioPark Charleroi.
According to the EU, the initiative seeks to bring together researchers, biotechnology specialists and businesses to advance medical innovation and develop solutions to health challenges in Guyana and the wider Caribbean.
Through the EU-funded PharmaNext initiative, the project will support specialised skills development, establish research partnerships and facilitate the transfer of knowledge and technology between Europe and Guyana.
The initiative is also expected to create opportunities for skilled employment, attract investment, strengthen local expertise and contribute to economic diversification.
The long-term objective is to translate scientific advances into improved health outcomes for Guyanese and people across the region.
The EU said discussions held this week with Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony and local partners focused on advancing the project. The discussions concluded that the initiative addresses existing needs and has the potential to establish an ecosystem centred on health, innovation and life sciences.
The Guyana BioPark is also aligned with the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, which supports investment in infrastructure and partnerships intended to promote sustainable development.
The EU said the next phase will focus on advancing the initiative through investments in people, knowledge and Guyana’s future.
