– Sparta notch 1st win to stay alive

Tiger Bay continued to send a stern message that their name should be in the bag for championship honours as they comprehensively defeated Plaisance 10-3 on the goal-filled Saturday night in the Corona Futsal Tournament held at the National Gymnasium.
The city side that held their nerve to pip defending champions Sparta Boss 4-3 in their opening match was intent on delivering more goals which wowed the sizable crowd in attendance.

Newton was not far behind with goals in the 9th, 11th and 14th.
Jermaine Scott (3rd & 17th) along with Orin Moore (13th) also etched their names on the scoresheet in the onslaught; the East Coast Demerara unit’s face-saving response came from Akeem Thomas (8th), Denzil King (15th) and O’Neil Clarke (18th).
Meanwhile, crowd favourites Sparta finally looked like bosses and produced a clinical display to defeat Mocha 6-2. It was not as easy as the score line read since the East Bank Demerara unit took the lead with goals from Amos Ramsey (4th) and Teon Jones (13th).
The dynamic Jermin Junior led Sparta’s response with strikes in the 5th and 7th but it was Jeremy Garrett with two bullet-like strikes in the 17th and 18th brought the champs back into the picture and from there it was procession which eased the tension among their numerous fans in attendance; an own goal in the 19th and Kurt Brittin (29th) closed-off proceedings.
Old Skool Ballers had a spirited come back via goals from Fabian Crawford (13th), Omari James (15th) and Rashawn Ritch (17th) but it was still Future Stars who walked away with the three points due to an Aaron Anthony hat-trick (2nd, 3rd & 12th) and Shane Morris (8th).
Similarly, California Square got their first win with a 8-5 thumping of North East La Penitence led by Dion Kelly (11th, 18th), Nedd Fraser (9th, 13th), Levi Canterbury (2nd), Wesley Garraway (6th), Christian Benjamin (11th) and Meshack Brandt (14th). Opposing goals came from Kelvin Moore (3rd, 12th), Keifer Brandt (1st, 7th) and Carl Tudor (18th).
Xtreme Campbellville got their first points by defeating New Market Street 10-2 in a complete team display. Hat-tricks rained from Shan Jones (6th, 16th & 18th) and Oziel Small (10th, 14th & 16th), while Carl Griffith (11th & 13th) and Ceon Richardson (12th & 15th) made inroads as well; Jerald King (9th) and Ryan October (12th) scored for New Market.
Broad Street wretched form continued and were on the receiving end another six-goal thumping this time from Alexander Village following a 3-6 embarrassment by Back Circle. Leon Yaw with a helmet-trick led the Villagers with goals in the 13th, 14th, 15th and 18th while Gordon Henry (19th) and Leroy Jonas (28th) also converted.
The tournament which is collaboration with NAMILCO Wheat Gem and Hero Motorcycle will continue on Tuesday with Tucville chasing their first win against Kingston from 19:00h followed by two unbeaten teams Alpha Warriors and Showstoppers from 19:50h. YMCA then opposes Sophia from 20:40h and Bent Street against Channel 9 Warriors from21:30h. The final two matches of the night are West Front Road- Gold is Money against Albouystown from 22:20h and Back Circle against Leopold Street from 23:15h. The winning purse for teams is the $600,000 and the championship trophy while two Hero motor cycles will be awarded to the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and the other to a lucky spectator at the finals on Easter Saturday (March 31).
