Trinidadian boxers dominate opening night

As was promised by Trinidad and Tobago Coach Jason Aqui, his boxers started off on the right track to “medalling in every category” as they won both of their fights on the opening night of the “Nuff Cuff” Caribbean School Boys/Juniors Boxing tournament being held at the National Gymnasium.

In the 57Kg Juniors’ Category, one of Trinidad’s top contenders Blessing Waldropt came up against Malichi Baker of Jamaica and gave a good account of his self as he walked away the victor of the first international bout. Waldropt’s countryman Nickell Joseph would also emerge the victor of a grueling encounter against Akeel Mounter of Guyana in the 75Kg Youth category.

In the other international bouts Tevin Brewster (Barbados) defeated Shemar Morrison (Guyana) in the 63Kg Juniors Category while in the 75Kg Youth Category; Jamaican Jerone Enniss overcame Jewel Matty of St Lucia via points in a split decision.

Earlier in the evening, Sean Graham defeated Moses Oxford in the local Schoolboys 32 Kg matchup, while Saquancy Wright won his matchup against Malachai Jones in the Schoolboys 37Kg category.

Travis Invarry came up against Jakeel Cadogan in the 42Kg Schoolboys Category and duly emerged the victor after a strong showing while Dwane Baptiste edged out Dwayne Castello via split decision in the 40Kg Schoolboys category.

Meanwhile, Director of Sports, Christopher Jones who was present at the opening ceremony took time to congratulate President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Steve Ninvalle and his team on their work that they have been doing thus far in the boxing fraternity.

He pointed out that while Guyana’s only Olympic medal has come through boxing so there is potential for that feat to be replicated in the future. Jones also highlighted that the Government of Guyana and the National Sports Commission remain dedicated to improving and developing young talent in Guyana.

Today’s final day action will commence at 19:00 hrs with tickets to ringside seats costing $1000 while entry to the stands cost $500.
