Come Saturday, the roadways of New Amsterdam, Berbice are expected to witness some exciting cycling action, as the Trojan Cycle Club, in partnership with the Berbice Chamber of Commerce and Development Association (BCCDA), stages a 60-mile cycle road race in observance of Indian Arrival Day.
Action gets underway from 14:30h, and participation is open to all interested cyclists. Cash prizes and trophies will be up for the taking for the first six finishers in the open category, first three in veterans, first four in juniors, and top three in juvenile and female categories. Numerous prime prizes will also be up for grabs.
The Indian High Commissioner to Guyana or a representative from that High Commission is expected to be on hand to witness the proceedings. The Chairman of Region 6, the Mayor of New Amsterdam and other dignitaries are also expected.
Exciting rivalry in cycling will resume on Saturday in the county of Berbice
President of BCCDA, Ryan Crawford, has said the activity is being held to commemorate the day, and is part of the BCCDA’s effort at giving back to the community.
Andrew ‘Padlock’ Green with a time of 1 hour, 47 minutes and 30 seconds (01: 47; 30s) won this event in 2017. The race then was 50 miles, and commenced at Main & Chapel Streets in New Amsterdam, proceeded to the then #37 Village turning point on the Corentyne Coast, and returned to the point of origin.
Stephano Husbands, Christopher Griffith, Lear Nunes, Brighton John and Sylvania Innis rounded off the top six positions.
There were eight prime prizes in the race. Green took four, Curtis Dey (three) and Husbands (one).
The juniors saw Brighton John in the winner’s position, followed by Dey and Jason Cameron in second and third respectively.
In the juvenile category, Kerwin Collins was the first to cross the line, ahead of Jonathan Ramsuchit and Jermain Heligar. Nunes, Everald Munday and Ian Jackson took the veterans’ top three positions.
