Truck driver charged over death of goldsmith in Enmore accident

A 34-year-old truck driver was on Thursday arraigned before Magistrate Fabayo Azore on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

Dead: Rajin Persad

Tillackram Dindial of Lot 21 Hope West, Enmore, East Coast Demerara (ECD), pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted $500,000 bail.
It is alleged that on July 5, 2021, at Hope West, Enmore Access Road, ECD, he drove motor lorry GWW 8721 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of 38-year-old Rajin Persad, a goldsmith of Foulis, ECD.
The defendant will return to the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court on August 8.
It was reported that on the day in question, Dindial was operating the truck on the northern parapet of Hope West, Enmore Access Road, in the vicinity of his premises. At the time, he was in the process of offloading sand.
While lowering the tray of the vehicle, Police said that Dindial reversed, and soon after his wife shouted out to him that he had run over one of their dogs.
However, upon making checks, he observed Persad under the truck with what appeared to be blood about his body.  An injured Persad was picked up by public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
According to the Police, a breathalyser test was conducted on Dindial but found no trace of alcohol in his system. But this was opposed after persons in the area had stated that the man was heavily intoxicated.
