UG shortlists 5 candidates for new Vice Chancellor position

The University of Guyana (UG) has advanced its search for a new Vice Chancellor, with five candidates now shortlisted following an international recruitment process.
In a statement on Thursday, Chancellor Sir Ronald Sanders said the search attracted 27 applications from Guyana, the wider Caribbean, Canada and India.
Following an initial review, the university’s Search Committee reduced the pool to 15 candidates for further consideration. The committee then enlisted the support of professors and other university specialists from the United Kingdom to assess the academic credentials of the applicants and assist in preparing a final shortlist.
The five shortlisted candidates will now proceed to the next stage of the selection process, which will include interviews and public lectures before a final appointment is made.
Sir Ronald said the position of Vice Chancellor is critical to the future of the university and Guyana’s development. He noted that the institution must continue producing graduates equipped with the skills, competencies and adaptability needed to support a growing and evolving economy while strengthening research, innovation and professional training.
The Chancellor also confirmed that the contract of the current Vice Chancellor, Professor Paloma Mohamed, will end on July 31, 2026. He expressed appreciation for her service to the university during her tenure.
To ensure continuity in the university’s administration, Sir Ronald announced that a three-member team drawn from the university’s staff will oversee operations from August 1 until the successful candidate assumes office.
He said the interim arrangement will allow the institution to continue functioning smoothly while the final phase of the recruitment process is completed.
The chancellor reaffirmed the University Council’s commitment to a fair, transparent and merit-based selection process, adding that the public will be updated as the search progresses.
