The University of Guyana (UG) has secured accreditation for its Bachelor of Accountancy Degree Programme from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), marking a significant achievement for the institution and its accounting education offerings.
According to the university, the accreditation is valid from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2030, and formally recognises the quality and international comparability of the programme.
While UG graduates have previously received ACCA exemptions on an individual basis, this is the first time the Bachelor of Accountancy programme itself has been accredited by the global professional accounting body.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Paloma Mohamed-Martin said the accreditation represents another step in the university’s efforts to strengthen its international standing.
“We are delighted to celebrate another step towards making the University of Guyana into a world-class university. Dr Aaron and SEBI are working with local partners and ACCA on several other products which will add value to our students and accelerate their certifications for quicker entry into professional practice. This is a big win for our students,” she said.
The accreditation was secured by the university’s School of Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation (SEBI). Dr Alfred Aaron, Head of the Department of Accountancy and Finance, described the development as a landmark achievement.
“This accreditation confirms that our Bachelor of Accountancy programme meets internationally recognised standards and reflects the quality of teaching, curriculum design, and assessment within the department. It is a significant achievement for the university and a major advantage for our students, who will now have a more direct pathway towards global professional certification,” Dr Aaron said.
Under the accreditation arrangement, graduates of the Bachelor of Accountancy programme from 2026 onwards who pursue the ACCA qualification will be eligible for exemptions from four papers: Business and Technology (BT), Management Accounting (MA), Financial Accounting (FA), and Corporate and Business Law (LW).
As a result, graduates will be required to complete nine remaining ACCA papers to obtain the professional qualification.
The university said the accreditation was made possible through the efforts of faculty, administrators, and professional staff. The accreditation process was led by Dr Aaron, who coordinated the submission and documentation requirements.
UG also acknowledged the support provided by the ACCA Trinidad team, including Senior Business Relationship Manager Anouska Sammy and Business Relationship Manager Aisha McKenna.
The university said the accreditation reflects its commitment to academic excellence and the development of graduates who can compete internationally and contribute to Guyana’s growing economy.
The achievement comes as SEBI continues to expand its specialised programmes, including the recent introduction of an associate degree in oil and gas accounting/taxation/audit and a graduate executive diploma in oil and gas accounting/taxation/audit.
In 2025, UG also attained institutional accreditation from the National Accreditation Council (NAC) for the first time since its establishment in 1963, further strengthening confidence in the quality of its academic programmes and student support systems.
