In a significant investment in the future of Guyanese cricket, Cricket West Indies (CWI) official partner Unicomer (Guyana) Inc has reinforced its commitment to grassroots development by donating GY$500,000 to the Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) Cricket Academy while giving young cricketers a memorable opportunity to interact with West Indies stars.
The initiative, dubbed “The WI Experience at Courts”, was held on Thursday at the Courts Mega Store on Main Street, where 20 aspiring cricketers from the Malteenoes Sports Club Cricket Academy met and engaged with four members of the West Indies team – Guyanese internationals Shamar Joseph, Gudakesh Motie and Keemo Paul, along with Ackeem Auguste.

The event formed part of efforts to bridge the gap between youth cricket and the international game, allowing the young players to gain valuable insights from athletes who have successfully progressed through the regional cricket system.
Beyond the inspirational interaction, Unicomer (Guyana) Inc made a tangible contribution to the academy’s future by presenting the GY$500,000 cheque to the Malteenoes Sports Club. The funding will support the continued growth and development of the club’s youth cricket programme, which has played an important role in nurturing young talent.
The academy participants had the opportunity to ask questions, receive advice on improving their game, and interact with the West Indies players in a relaxed setting, creating an experience expected to leave a lasting impression on the youngsters.
Expressing its appreciation for the initiative, the Malteenoes Sports Club highlighted the importance of exposing young cricketers to role models who have reached the highest level of the sport.
“Having 20 of our Malteenoes Sports Club Cricket Academy kids meet West Indies stars Shamar Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Keemo Paul and Ackeem Auguste was a moment they’ll never forget. With this sponsorship it will give a boost to our academy programme, which will go a long way in strengthening grassroots cricket. We’re proud to be part of bridging the gap between our youth and the international arena,” the club said in a statement.
The initiative underscores the growing emphasis on developing the next generation of cricketers through meaningful partnerships between the corporate sector and the sport. By combining financial support with direct engagement from current international players, programmes such as “The WI Experience” aim to inspire young athletes while providing clubs with the resources needed to continue developing future West Indies representatives.
