Unlicensed Cuban driver charged with causing deaths of Indonesian nationals

Timehri 3-vehicle smash-up

A Cuban national who was not licensed to drive in Guyana was charged on Thursday and remanded to prison for causing the deaths of two Indonesian nationals during a three-vehicle smash-up along the Timehri Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD), last Friday.

Thirty-five-year-old Ramon Rodrigues of Land of Canaan, EBD, appeared at the Friendship Magistrate’s Court, where the charges were read to him.
Police stated that on Friday, August 28, 2026, Rodrigues, a driver attached to Avinash Construction Inc, drove a motor lorry in a dangerous manner, thereby causing the deaths of Edy Sukri and Ikomang Putra – both Indonesian nationals.
He was not required to plead to the indictment and was remanded to prison until September 25, 2026.
It was reported that the accident occurred in the wee hours of the morning and involved motor lorry, GAJ 3074, a Route 63 minibus with registration number BAH 6588, and a contracted minibus with plates BAF 1135.
The two dead men and the injured were passengers of minibus BAF 1135.
The motor lorry was reportedly heading to Timehri, EBD, at a fast rate of speed when the driver allegedly swerved and came into contact with minibus BAH 6588, which was proceeding in the opposite direction.
Due to the collision, the driver of the lorry lost control and crashed into minibus BAF 1135, which was behind the other minibus.
As a result of the smash-up, the occupants of minibus BAF 1135 sustained injuries to their bodies. An ambulance attached to the Guyana Defence Force, accompanied by emergency medical technicians, responded to the scene where the two Indonesian nationals were pronounced dead.
