The 6th edition of the Guinness Greatness of the Streets continued on Thursday night with eight breathtaking games at the Demerara Park tarmac which saw stern
competition from crowd likely underdogs with half of the matches being decided from the penalty spot.
In the first match of the night, Alexander Village played with blood, sweat and ignorance to draw their match with Up Like 7, two goals apiece but were edged out of the super 16 going down 3-2 on sudden death from the spot.
Gerald King had marked his name early for the Alexander Village side who took the lead in the 3rd minute (3’). Mark Carrega quickly replied four minutes later to level the match. Dwayne Lowe, in the 18’ then sent Up Like 7 into the slim lead only to have Kevin Gordon (20’) equalize for the villagers.
Nkosie Barker’s goal in the 26’ was enough for North Ruimveldt needle Jamoon Drive 1-0 while Alboystown A and Upsetters played scoreless in fulltime where Albouystown won 2-0 on penalty kicks.
Similarly, North East La Penitance and Island All-Stars B played to a draw where the All-Stars B lost on penalty kicks 2-0 and West Back Road defeated Albouystown B 2-1 in the sudden death kicks following a nil-nil draw in full time.
Broad Street Bullies took advantage of Howes Street A in the most crowd entertaining match of the night where they won convincingly 3-0. Lennox Cort and Rock Gravesande scored a minute a part (6’ and 7’) to ensure their side retained an unassailable lead before Devon Johnson sunk the final blow in the 17’. Back Circle also defeated East Front road 1-0 thanks to Jermin Beckles who scored in the 7’.
In the final contest, Stevedore piped West Front Road 1-2 to advance to the super 16 round robin stage.Dorwin filter scored in the 17’ for Stevedore before Michael Pedro replied in the 28’ but Keifer Brandt’s goal a few seconds later was enough to send West Front Road packing.
The teams that will now compete in the super 16 round robin stage are Up Like 7, North Ruimveldt, Albouystown-A, Broad Street Bullies, North East La Penitence, West Back Road, Stevedore, Back Circle, Sparta Boss, Queen Street Tiger Bay, Camp Street All-Stars, Bent Street, Leopold Street, Festival City Warriors, Tucville and Channel-9 Warriors.
The games continue tonight at the Burnham Court with the round robin action from 19:00h.
The teams will all be vying for over one million dollars in cash and prizes with the first team taking home $500,000 while second, third and fourth will cart off with $200,000, $150,000 and $75,000 respectively.
