Utility services disrupted as thunderstorm hits Linden

The Linden community of Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) was subjected to severe thunderstorms and rain over the weekend. Heavy downpours, coupled with high winds on Saturday and Sunday appeared to put an end to days of extreme heat experienced in the community over the past few weeks and resulted in numerous power outages and damaged phone lines.thunderstorm
Highlying areas such as Amelia’s Ward at Mackenzie, Wisroc and Block 22 at Wismar were more so subjected to lightning and thunderstorms. Over the weekend, numerous residents reported disruption to their landline and phone services, as well as internet and transformers. At Retrieve, Mackenzie, it was reported that numerous transformers were damaged during the storm on Sunday. This led to an extended power outage in a section of the community.
While telephone and electricity technicians worked to restore the services, many residents suffered the inconvenience of having to wait hours before electricity was restored, while others reported permanent damage to items such as internet modems and landline phones.
In areas such as Silvertown, there were reports of minor flooding.
