Vendor crashes vehicle, dies while escaping from bandits
Police are investigating the death of an Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) vendor who died after he crashed the minibus he was driving into a fence in order to escape bandits.
Dead is 39-year-old Shawn Albert called “Dexter Prince” and “Rastaman”.
Reports are that the father of one and his colleague, Decklon Lees, who are both employed by Lins Bakery, located at South Road, Georgetown, were selling pasties at about 18:45h at Pam John shop at Church Street, Onderneeming, Essequibo Coast, when two masked men approached them.
Police on Monday said that one of the men pointed a handgun at Lees and ordered that he hand over the money as Albert sat in the driver’s seat of the minibus, GWW 1783.
A scuffle ensued with Lees and the suspect with the gun and the gunman discharged about three rounds in Lees’s direction, however, the bullets missed him. Albert in response attempted to escape the bandits and drove the bus but crashed into a nearby fence. The bandits escaped with between $60,000 to $70,000.
Albert was rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body was examined but no gunshot wound was seen, Police said, noting that the body is at the Suddie Hospital Mortuary awaiting PME.
