A 26-year-old Venezuelan national has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm without a licence. Luis Eduardo Lepaje Chacon, a labourer of Prospect, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was charged with Unlawful Possession of Firearm Without Licence contrary to Section 16(2)(a) of the Firearms Act, Chapter 16:05. Chacon was arrested on last Thursday and was charged on Monday. He appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Diamond Magistrates’ Courts, where the charge was read to him in English and translated into Spanish. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment.

The charge stemmed from an investigation conducted by police in Regional Division 4 ‘B’ following the discovery of a suspected firearm at Prospect Housing Scheme, EBD. According to police, ranks received information that a man had entered a business establishment and was later seen with what appeared to be a firearm.
Acting on the report, police went to Prospect Housing Scheme and made contact with Chacon. Further investigations led officers to a construction site in the area, where a search was carried out. During the search, ranks discovered a black pistol with an empty magazine concealed at the location.
Police also found several cellular phones and a Rambo-type knife during the operation.
