WCB miner busted with cocaine remanded

After being busted with a quantity of cocaine at a location in Region One (Barima-Waini), Alexander Braithwaite, a miner of Kingelly Village, West Coast Berbice, was on Friday charged for trafficking the illegal drug.

Braithwaite denied the charge, which stated that on January 14, at Skull Mountain Arakaka Compound, North West District (NWD), he had in his possession 164.5 grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
Defence Counsel Jerome Khan in a bail application requested that the court release his client on bail. However, the police prosecutor objected due to the prevalence of the charge.
Police reports are that ranks acting on information received, went to Skull Mountain Arakaka Compound, NWD, where they found the 63-year-old man in an open verandah on a business premises. According to the prosecution’s case, a search was carried out on his person and a black bag wrapped in transparent plastic containing a quantity of cream substance suspected to be cocaine was found in his haversack.
Having listened to both the prosecution and defence submissions, acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus remanded Braithwaite to prison. The case will continue on February 3, 2020, at the Mathews Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
