WCD man charged for escaping Police custody

A West Coast Demerara (WCD) man was on Friday charged with escaping from lawful custody when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Jose Hamid, 23, of Blankenburg, WCD, pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on June 28, 2016 at Eve Leary, Georgetown, while being in lawful custody for questioning in a simple larceny matter, he escaped.

The prosecution objected to bail and told the court that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is investigating the defendant for a murder and several other matters.

As such, the matter was transferred to the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court for January 13. The defendant was remanded to prison.
