We are living in dangerous times

Dear Editor,
When Azruddin Mohammed made the statement “I will destroy Jagdeo and Ali,” he was dead serious about it, and subsequent incidents have proven this to be the fact. The most recent action to date is testament to this man’s intentions. But let us trace the genesis to these sordid events. The entire episode began when the opposition leader was sanctioned by the United States of America for various serious offenses, and ever since that time, he has embarked on a destructive course.
He has initiated a series of unprovoked attacks on those he perceives as enemies; in this case, the PPP/C government and Ali and Jagdeo in particular. These terroristic attacks are geared at bringing down the PPP/C government, whom he claims are not covering him from extradition.
He carries out these brazen attacks, then turns again and blames the victims, saying he is only defending himself against those who are out to kill him. But these aren’t defensive obligations; they are the harsh realities of a dangerous and desperate man who believes that he is above the law.
Prime examples are the flying of a drone over the president’s residence and now, the shooting up of the home of the chief witness at his extradition hearings. It all ties in to the vengeful, jihadist mindset of the fugitive offender. As a true Muslim, vengeance is part and parcel of his Koranic teachings, and he would not hesitate to carry it out.
But using violence as a means to get one’s message across is nothing new; it is just that we have a new kid on the block, but the signature stamp is as old as the hills. For decades this has been the strategy of the PNC. Burnham used it to good advantage, and so did Hoyte, who followed up in time with “Slo fiah moh fiah” and statements such as “I would make this country ungovernable.”
So, Azruddin is in that company of despicable persons who will resort to violent overt acts whenever and wherever the situation suits him. And I dare say, if security is not strengthened, God forbid, there would be more of these occurrences taking place.

Respectfully,
Neil Adams
