Lewis said his decision was prompted by the allegations and the ongoing police investigation.
“I have taken this decision in light of allegations that have been made against me and the ongoing investigation into those allegations. Given the seriousness of the matter and the responsibilities attached to public office, I believe that resigning from the National Assembly is the appropriate course of action while the relevant processes are ongoing,” he stated in his letter.
The former parliamentarian stressed that his resignation should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing or guilt adding that he remains committed to due process and to allowing the relevant authorities to conduct their investigations.
“I am grateful to the people of Guyana for the opportunity to serve as a Member of Parliament and to We Invest in Nationhood for the confidence placed in me. I hereby submit this resignation in accordance with Article 156(1)(a) of the Constitution of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana,” the letter added.
