Works advancing on extending Ogle-Eccles Highway to Providence

With the aim of further easing traffic congestion, construction works are progressing on the new connector road linking Providence on the East Bank Demerara (EBD) corridor to the Ogle-Eccles Highway.
This is according to Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, who shared a video of the ongoing road works to his Facebook page on Tuesday.
The approximately two-kilometre bypass road will continue from the Ogle end of the highway and connect to the Heroes Highway at the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge roundabout, thus creating a smoother link for commuters.
The project is being undertaken by Indian firm Ashoka Buildcon Limited, which constructed the Ogle-Eccles Highway.
But even as the construction works are progressing, the Ministry of Housing is currently engaging over a dozen households in Providence that will have to relocate to facilitate the new road link.

This project forms part of the government’s expanding road network aimed at improving connectivity and easing traffic congestion along the East Bank corridor, which takes off traffic coming from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA); from Region Three (Essequibo Island-West Demerara) via the Demerara River Bridge; and from other hinterland regions as well.
In fact, the Housing Ministry has constructed two slip lanes along the Heroes Highway to facilitate traffic coming from and going onto the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge.
Already, the metal barriers have been installed from the Eccles end of the western “slip lane” that runs from the Demerara River Bridge access road to the Haags Bosch Road. When completed, this lane will facilitate traffic coming off from the bridge and taking it directly onto the Haags Bosch Road, which connects to the East Bank Public Road.
On the eastern side of the Heroes Highway, the additional lane has already been completed and opened up for public use, adding a third lane to accommodate traffic from the Eccles Roundabout, which connects to the Ogle-Eccles Highway, to the roundabout at the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge access road.
In Budget 2026, some $13 billion was earmarked to advance the Ogle-Eccles Highway to Providence connector road, which will also be further extended to Diamond, EBD.
Additionally, another $28.6 billion has been allocated to continue the Heroes Highway from Buzz Bee Dam to Land of Canaan. Eventually, this highway will extend to the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
Meanwhile, $8.4 billion has also been set aside to continue the upgrade of the Good Success to Timehri Road on the EBD, while some $13.1 billion has been allotted to advance works on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
