A 16-year-old boy from Circuitville, Yarrowkabra, along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway, reportedly drowned in the Siparuni River in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) after allegedly disappearing underwater while attempting to cross the river.
The teen, identified as Bentley Joseph Jr, had reportedly travelled with several others from their camp to an area known as “Tunnel” to engage in mining activities.
Reports indicated that on Sunday, Joseph and his cousin were attempting to cross the Siparuni River on foot at an area known as Rock Bar when he fell into the rapidly flowing water.
Although he reportedly attempted to swim, Joseph went under and did not resurface. An alarm was raised, prompting a search for the teenager. His body was discovered floating in the river on Tuesday.
Police were summoned to the scene, and an examination of the body revealed no visible marks of violence which suggested foul play was involved.
Joseph’s body was subsequently transported to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination. Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the teen’s death are ongoing.
