1 killed, several injured during early-morning accident in Lethem

An early-morning accident along the Tabatinga Public Road, Lethem, Region Nine (Upper Essequibo-Takutu) has left one woman dead and several others injured.
The dead woman has been identified as 28-year-old Violet Stephen of St Ignatius Village, Central Rupununi.
Reports are that the accident took place around 02:30h on Sunday when the driver of a motor pick-up lost control. As a result, the vehicle toppled several times before coming to a halt on its left side.
At the time of the accident, at least two passengers were in the tray of the vehicle. They were reportedly tossed out of the vehicle, sustaining injuries about their bodies. They were later identified as Ronaldo Bento and David Coates also of Central Rupununi.
The injured were taken to the Lethem Regional Hospital where Stephen died while receiving treatment. Bento and Coates were admitted to the medical institution. At least two other injured persons were treated and sent away.
According to the Police, the driver of the vehicle is a clerk attached to the Lethem Magistrate’s Court. He suffered no injuries and was presently in custody assisting with the investigation.
