Two Brazilian nationals were on Tuesday fined and ordered deported after admitting to entering Guyana illegally through a land border without reporting to immigration authorities.
Franscio Lopes, 47, and Junior Condrad, 32, both of Boa Vista, Roraima, Brazil, appeared before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court, where the charge was read to them.
The court heard that the men entered Guyana by crossing a land frontier and failed to present themselves forthwith to the nearest Immigration Officer, contrary to Section 34(1)(b) of the Immigration Act, Chapter 14:02. Both defendants pleaded guilty to the offence.
Following their admission, Magistrate Chandan imposed a fine of $30,000 on each of the men. In addition, the court ordered their immediate deportation.
Only weeks ago, five other foreign nationals, four Brazilians and one Cuban, were similarly charged and fined for illegal entry.
Those individuals, identified as Samuel Dionisa Soares, 24, an operator of Boa Vista, Brazil; Berto Dasena, a labourer of Marau, Brazil; Yosbani Suarez Areces, 49, a Cuban national and operator of Boa Vista, Brazil; Rafael Da Conceico Viera, 30, an operator of Boa Vista, Brazil; and Deusimar Feitosa Dos Santos, 53, a cook of Boa Vista, Brazil, appeared before Senior Magistrate Clive Nurse at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court via Zoom on April 1.
They also pleaded guilty to the offence of illegal entry. In that matter, each defendant was fined $30,000 or faced six weeks’ imprisonment in default of payment. The court further ordered that they depart Guyana within 24 hours.
