$25M wharf to benefit Region 6 residents, Amerindian communities

A project that is likely to benefit farmers along the Corentyne River including Orealla and Siparuta is nearing completion.
A million wharf is being constructed at Corriverton and will assist farmers from those Amerindian communities with a bond. It will also benefit school children traveling from those riverine communities.
Region Six Chairman David Armogan told Guyana Times that the first phase of the project will cost million. The rest of the funds will be used to construct the bond.

Alluding to the impact the facility will have, Armogan noted: “One of the things that was said to me a couple of years ago in Orealla and Siparuta, is that when they bring their produce out to Springlands or to the Number 79 Market, the wholesalers want to buy their stuff very cheap, and because they don’t have any holding place where they can store their produce they have to sell it out very cheaply and get back to Orealla very quickly.”
He said now that the bond is being constructed, those farmers will be able to store their produce and sell it over a period of a few days.
“The wharf that we are building is for two sets of people; it is for people coming out of Orealla and farmers coming out of the Corentyne River. Currently, these farmers have nowhere to discharge their produce; sometimes when the tide is low, they have to wait for hours until the tide rises so that they can get their produce to land.
“School children and everybody else is using the launch service and because there is no wharf you find that these children will be walking on very narrow boards up to 300 yards in length to get onto the launch. The launch is outside and can’t come in because the tide is low and this is very dangerous for them,” he added.
In justifying the project, the Regional Chairman noted that residents of the two Amerindian communities will have wharf service, making it is easy for them and at the same time they will have a bond to store their produce: “I hope that this will be an imput for them to produce more agricultural stuff, both in the Orealla/Siporuta area as well as the Corentyne River, so I think it is a good thing for farmers.”
