Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Nigel Dharamlall on Friday handed over $20 million subventions to eight Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDC) and another $9 million to the Anna Regina Town Council to advance services within various districts in the region.
The ceremonial handing over was done at the Regional Democratic Boardroom, Anna Regina, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).
Speaking at the ceremony, Dharamlall said that residents must be informed and be involved in various Government interventions within their respective NDCs.
He stated that the subvention was disbursed in the region to ensure that resources are made available for development.
“It is part of our Government’s commitment to ensure that we provide better physical development in every village in Region Two… you will be the one helping us to see many transformational changes in the region. We expect that a balance is used to complete work that has not yet been fully completed… you all as NDC overseers and chairs should ensure that work done are more meaningful to persons on the ground,” Dharamlall explained.
In addition, he called on the NDC leaders and the Mayor of the Township of Anna Regina, Rajendra Prabulall to honour their obligations and partner with the residents to address issues in their villages.
Further, he noted that the Government will continue to advance work in all the NDC areas to better the lives of residents.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Anna Regina expressed gratitude to the Government for its timely subvention which will be used in various transformational projects along the Essequibo Coast and Hinterland areas within Region Two.
NDC chairs and overseers also expressed gratitude to the Ministry and vowed to continue working with the various villages to bring major development.
The NDCs that received cheques are Good Hope/Pomona, Annandale/Riverstown, Aberdeen/Zorg-en-Vlygt, Evergreen/Paradise, Charity/Urasara, Nile/Cozier, Kitty/Providence and Moruka/Pheonix.
