Three men from the Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomroon-Supenaam), have been fined by Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir after pleading guilty to a series of traffic offences heard at the Anna Regina and Charity Magistrates’ Courts.
Construction worker Tageraj Khemraj, 29, of Riverstown, Essequibo Coast, was charged with driving while his breath alcohol level exceeded the prescribed legal limit. 
The offence occurred on May 18 along the Airy Hall Public Road, Essequibo Coast. The charge was instituted under Section 39A (1) of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02, as amended by the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic (Amendment) Act No. 17 of 2022.
Khemraj appeared before Magistrate Mohabir at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court on June 19, where the charge was read to him. He pleaded guilty and was fined $200,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in six months’ imprisonment.
In a separate matter, Errol Williams, a 50-year-old labourer of West Public Road, Mainstay, Essequibo Coast, pleaded guilty to five traffic-related offences.
The charges included dangerous driving, driving without a licence, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, operating an uncertified motor vehicle, and operating an unlicensed motor vehicle. The offences were committed on June 17 along the La Union Public Road, Essequibo Coast.
Williams appeared before the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court on June 19. He was fined $50,000 for dangerous driving, with a default sentence of three months’ imprisonment. He was also fined $30,000 for driving without a licence and $30,000 for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, each carrying a default sentence of three months’ imprisonment.
Additionally, he was fined $10,000 for operating an uncertified motor vehicle and $10,000 for operating an unlicensed motor vehicle, with default sentences of two weeks’ imprisonment for each offence. His total fines amounted to $130,000.
Meanwhile, Nyoon George, a 22-year-old miner of Hoppie Street, Dartmouth Village, Essequibo Coast, was charged with driving without a licence, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, operating an uncertified motor vehicle, and operating an unlicensed motor vehicle.
The offences occurred on June 12 at Bounty Hall, Essequibo Coast. George appeared before the Charity Magistrate’s Court on June 22, where he pleaded guilty to all charges.
He was fined $30,000 for driving without a licence and $30,000 for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, with default sentences of three months’ imprisonment on each charge. He was further fined $10,000 for operating an uncertified motor vehicle and $10,000 for operating an unlicensed motor vehicle, each carrying a default sentence of two weeks’ imprisonment.
George’s total fines amounted to $80,000.
