Linden backs waste-to-wealth initiative to reduce Blue Lake dumping

The Linden Municipality has thrown its support behind a waste management initiative aimed at reducing the volume of biodegradable waste being disposed of at the dumping site located at the entrance to the Blue Lake area. Waste To Wealth Caribbean and its official execution partner, Outliers Zone Caribbean, recently met with Town Clerk Lennox Gasper and Deputy Mayor Wainewright Bethune, where they conducted a live composting demonstration and outlined a programme designed to divert biodegradable waste from the site. According to the organisation, up to 50 per cent of the biodegradable waste currently sent to the dumping area could be redirected through household composting practices.
The initiative also received the endorsement of Mayor Dominique Blair, who is currently on leave but expressed support for the programme during a telephone conversation with organisers. The municipality’s backing marks the first formal endorsement of the Waste To Wealth movement outside of Georgetown. The organisation said the support represents an important step in its goal of establishing composting communities across Guyana’s 10 administrative regions.
In a release on Tuesday, it was stated that as part of the expansion into Region 10, Waste To Wealth Caribbean will host a Train-the-Trainer Composting Certification Programme on Thursday from 09:00h to midday at the Guymine Constabulary Recreation Hall and Club in Linden.

Organisers said registration remains open, although available spaces are limited and enrolment will close once capacity is reached. The training session is based on the organisation’s T.E.C.H. Composting Method, which converts household kitchen waste and cardboard into compost known as Organic Miracle Garden Soil (O.M.G.S.) over a period of approximately 12 weeks using a two-bucket system.
Participants will receive a composting kit, practical training, weekly technical support for 12 weeks, and guidance through their first compost harvest. The programme carries a participation fee of $50,000. Upon successfully completing the programme and producing their first batch of compost, participants may qualify for certification as Waste To Wealth Trainers. Certified trainers can then assist other households in the programme and earn compensation for each family they support through to their first harvest.
Founder of Waste To Wealth Caribbean, Rampertab Etwaria, said the initiative encourages residents to view organic waste as a resource rather than a disposal problem. “The dumping site does not have to be the final destination for our wealth. Every family in Linden can take responsibility and become part of this sustainable solution,” Etwaria said. The organisation has also invited the Local Government and Regional Development Ministry, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Regional Executive Officer (REO), and members of the private sector to support the programme through sponsorships for community participants and staff. Waste To Wealth Caribbean reported that since launching its public education campaign in April 2026, it has engaged 57 families in Georgetown and surrounding communities. The organisation has also received endorsements from the EPA, the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown, and landfill management authorities. It stated that its long-term objective is to reduce landfill-bound biodegradable waste by 25 per cent by 2030 through the development of 1,000 Waste To Wealth Champion Families across Guyana. Outliers Zone Caribbean has been appointed as the official execution partner for the Region 10 expansion and is responsible for project implementation, stakeholder engagement, public relations, media outreach and community mobilisation.
