3 more unvaccinated persons succumb to COVID, death toll now 971

– 94 new cases detected in 24h

The country’s coronavirus death toll moved to 971 on Friday after the Health Ministry reported that three more unvaccinated persons succumbed to the virus.
The Ministry listed the latest fatalities as a 27-year-old male from Region Four; a 53-year-old female from Region Three and a 66-year-old female from Region Four. They all died on November 19 while seeking medical care.
However, new statistics provided by the Ministry showed that 94 new cases of the virus were detected, taking the total positives to 37,184.
In addition, 13 persons are being monitored in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 60 in institutional isolation, 1818 in home isolation, and four in institutional quarantine. Recoveries stand at 34,322.
Some 378,786 COVID-19 tests have been administered since the virus was detected here.
Regionally, a breakdown showed two new cases were recorded in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam); 19 in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara); 34 in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica); six in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice); 11 in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne); three in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni); two in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni); six in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) and 13 in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
There were no new cases in Region One (Barima-Waini).
When asked if the health sector has adequate personal protective equipment for frontline workers, Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony assured, “We do have an adequate supply of PPEs and by that, we mean N95 masks, hair covers, shoe covers, gowns. We do have adequate supplies of all of these and we have been distributing it to our health facilities across the country.”
This week, it was revealed that all ports of entry are now opened to facilitate travel into and out of Guyana, inclusive of flights between neighbouring Brazil. Before any person is allowed to enter Guyana, whether by land or sea, that person shall present to the relevant authorities a negative Molecular PCR test taken within 72 hours of their arrival, along with proof of vaccination.

Data from the World Health Organisation shows that there are over 254 million confirmed cases of the disease globally, with over 5.1 million reported deaths. The Americas account for 95 million cases and over 2.3 million deaths.
