6 persons slapped with DUI charges

Police traffic ranks arrested and charged six men during the past week for driving while they were above the prescribed alcohol limit. These alleged law breakers will be arraigned during this month at Magistrate’s Courts along the East Coast of Demerara (ECD).
Charged are Kaeron Thomas, 39, of Second Street, Montrose, ECD; Carlos Billey, 49, of Sideline Dam Beterverwagting, ECD; 33-year-old Andy Sugrim of Rebecca Rust, Mahaicony, ECD; Mahendra Arjune, a 27-year-old of Haslington, ECD; 24-year-old Jermaine Vasconcellos of Middle Street, Buxton, ECD; and Adrian Ramdeo, 55, of Lusignan, ECD.
Driving while above the prescribed alcohol limit attracts a charge for the offence of driving under the influence (DUI) which carries a fine. Persons can be charged for this traffic violation if, when tested, their blood alcohol content is found to exceed the prescribed limit of 35 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, and their blood alcohol concentration exceeds 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has launched countrywide campaigns aimed at encouraging drivers to practise safe road use.
At one such campaign on the Beterverwagting Public Road, ECD drivers were lectured on the road safety theme “Arrive Alive, Stop Speeding, Don’t Drink & Drive”; obeying traffic officials, signs and functions of the traffic light; adherence to the speed limits and maintenance of motor vehicles.
They were also advised against using handheld devices while driving and driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Drivers were also told to ensure that their driver’s licence and other documents are up to date before using a motor vehicle.
Police statistics show that driving under the influence of alcohol and excessive speeding are the leading causes of accidents in Guyana. (G1)
