The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) on Monday said that Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee represents not only six decades of sovereignty, but also the collective journey and contributions of the country’s diverse peoples. The ERC noted that Guyana’s history has been shaped by Indigenous peoples and the descendants of Africans, East Indians, Portuguese, Chinese, Europeans and others who came to the country over the years. According to the Commission, the nation’s story reflects diversity, perseverance and shared nationhood. The Commission said the anniversary is also a reflection of Guyana’s development since gaining independence in 1966, highlighting progress in democracy, institutions and economic growth. It pointed to the country’s expansion in sectors including oil and gas, infrastructure, technology, agriculture, tourism and education, noting that Guyana has become one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.
The ERC also acknowledged periods of ethnic division and tension in the country’s history but said Guyanese continue to demonstrate the ability to rise above differences and strengthen social harmony.
As the country celebrates its Diamond Jubilee, the Commission encouraged citizens to continue embracing unity, tolerance, patriotism and collective responsibility.
The ERC said preserving and strengthening harmony, mutual respect and social cohesion remain important to ensuring a peaceful, inclusive and prosperous future for present and future generations.
