60th Independence Jubilee Hockey Extravaganza takes centre stage from this weekend

As Guyana marks a historic milestone, 60 years of independence, the nation is set to ignite its premier sporting ground with elite hockey action. The Diamond Jubilee Cup, a thrilling outdoor three-part tournament, will take place on May 23, 24, and 30, 2025, at the iconic Guyana National Stadium, Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The tournament is proudly made possible by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, as part of a string of ongoing Independence Sport tournaments.
Competition gets underway on May 23 and 24 with round-robin group stage matches, running from 09:00h through the afternoon. The top two teams from the round-robin stage will advance to the finals on May 30, with the championship showdown kicking off at 18:30h under the lights of the National Stadium.

The men’s competition is brimming with talent that is sure to captivate fans from the first whistle. Recent Most Valuable Player Omar Hopkinson brings his award-winning form to the tournament, while Junior National Captain Shaquan Favourite will look to assert his leadership on the biggest stage. Hikers’ dynamic superstar Jamarj Assanah is expected to dazzle crowds with his explosive style of play, and the supremely skilful Jabari Lovell of Saints Hockey Club rounds out a field packed with class and flair.
The women are not to be outdone. Old Fort captain Carolyn Deane leads her side with the poise and experience befitting a seasoned skipper. GCC’s Abosaide Cadogan, the reigning Most Valuable Player, promises to light up the tournament with her outstanding performances. At the same time, Saints’ shot-stopper Sarah Harry will be the last line of defence, marshalling her goal with the expertise that has made her one of the most respected goalkeepers in the game.
According to the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB), the Diamond Jubilee Cup is more than a sporting event; it is a celebration of national pride, athletic excellence, and Guyana’s enduring spirit.
