An accident at Capoey Lake, Essequibo Coast has claimed the life of seven-year-old Wesley Benn and injured others.
The car in which Benn and others were travelling took a nose dive off a bridge and into the lake at approximately 16:00hrs on Saturday.
According to reports, the child’s fellow travellers were able to exit the vehicle but the boy was not so fortunate. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Suddie Public Hospital. An investigation has been launched.
The GPF had recorded 26 fatalities for the first quarter of 2017. This is a decrease from the 2016 figure, when 29 fatalities occurred in the first three months of the year.
The police say that serious, minor and damage accidents have been reduced by 23.3%, 36% and 37% respectively.
Of the 26 persons who lost their lives, seven were drivers, six were pedestrians, five were pedal cyclists, four were motor cyclists, and four were occupants of the vehicles in which they were travelling.
Private cars accounted for most of the vehicles involved, standing at 12, while there were four pedal cycles, three minibuses, four motor lorries, four hire cars, one motor pickup, and four motor cycles.
