79-year-old woman perishes Wakenaam blaze

The kerosene stove which may have started the fire on Sunday

Seventy-nine-year-old Bissoondai also called “Seema” was on Sunday burnt to death after her Zealandia, Wakenaam, Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) home went up in flames.
Based on information received, the fire was spotted at about 06:30h. The now dead woman’s son told investigators that he saw his mother alive at about 05:45h. However, another son who lives close by related that at about 06:30h, he saw smoke emanating from the house and rushed to his mother’s aid.
As he arrived, he saw his mother lying on the floor and her body was on fire. A kerosene stove was reportedly seen in the building.
The woman reportedly sustained extensive burns about her body. She was taken to the Wakenaam Cottage Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her body is at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
An investigation has been launched into the fatal fire.
