A 92-member Guyanese delegation has arrived in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, ahead of the fifth International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) World Shoto Cup Karate Tournament

The delegation, which departed Guyana on Wednesday, October 21, comprises 46 competitors and officials, along with 46 parents and supporters, as the country’s karateka prepare to compete against some of the world’s leading traditional Shotokan athletes.
Travelling in two groups through Houston and Panama, the Guyanese contingent arrived in Mexico following months of training, national competitions and preparation for the international event.
The tournament will feature competitors from several countries, including host nation Mexico, Barbados, Australia, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, the United States, and Belize, among others.
Before entering competition, the Guyanese athletes will participate in international training seminars on Thursday, October 22, and Friday, October 23, under the guidance of Shihan Hiroyoshi Okazaki.
The sessions will provide the athletes with an opportunity to refine their techniques and sharpen their focus ahead of the tournament.
Competition begins on Friday, October 23, with the Junior Rank divisions, while the Brown and Black Belt divisions will compete on Saturday, October 24, and Sunday, October 25.
The Guyanese contingent includes experienced international competitors and emerging athletes who will be seeking to make their mark against opponents from across the world.
For ISKF-Guyana, participation in the World Shoto Cup represents another important opportunity to assess the country’s progress in traditional Shotokan karate while providing valuable international exposure for its athletes.
The tournament will also allow younger members of the delegation to test their abilities against international opposition and gain experience competing at a higher level.
With preparations nearing completion, the Guyanese karateka will now look to translate their months of training into strong performances as they represent the Golden Arrowhead on the international stage.
