The thought of a Linden-based Men’s Super-16 final was thrown out on Sunday night, as the lone remaining Linden-based team was ousted from the year-end competition, while the 2021 local transfer window came back to haunt Fruta Conquerors; both in two emphatic games in the mining town of Linden.
Meanwhile, previously on Christmas night the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and Western Tigers also secured semi-final spots, following a double header in Bartica.
The Boxing Day football roster saw Fruta taking on Den Amstel at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, where the latter won 3-1. Numerous transfers out of the club in 2021 and 2022 finally came back to hurt the Tucville-based Fruta Conquerors, as they could only muster a single goal reply.
Den Amstel played smartly and saw the results of their labour early, with a Gideon Payne goal in the 15th minute. Keanu Laurence followed suit about 10 minutes later but made it a double strike with goals in the 26th and 28th.
The Elite League Champions, Fruta, finally found their footing in the second half, but a lone goal from Rishaun Ritch in the 50th minute was not enough to advance to the semi-final.
Later on, defending champions the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) matched strides with Milerock FC and that resulted in heartbreak for the Linden fans as they witnessed their team succumb on home turf. Milerock had the upper hand with a 25th minute goal from Denzil Fordyce and enjoyed it for quite a while.
