Rehabilitation works to commence soon on Belle West roads

During a visit to the community of Belle West, on the West Bank of Demerara (WBD), the Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, told residents that rehabilitation works on several roads in the area would commence soon.

He noted that, in the past, the Ministry had received several complaints about the deteriorating condition of the roads, thus making them impassable for vehicles. As such, he stated, a cabinet decision was taken earlier this year to rehabilitate 10 priority roads in the Belle West area. He further told residents that the tendering for the rehabilitation works was closed since June.
“With these roads, normally, because of the size of the money that you got to spend, you got to put it out to tender, and tender would go for like 3 weeks, and then you got to evaluate; but this tender was closed since June 30th. You had the whole of July, now August, so it was delayed, much to my disappointment,” he explained.

“These 10 roads that we’re gonna start with is just the start. This is the start, more will be done, but whilst this tender is being done, I want it to be done properly,” he detailed. “We will pick up couple more of the streets…the ones that miss on this first one, and go on another couple more,” Minister Indar added.
Each road will be done by a different contractor. These are P. Hariram & Son Contracting; Expert General Contracting Service; Hoosein Logistics & Supplies Inc; Joshi Construction & Establishment; MK Hanif Construction Service; Amic General Contracting Service; VR Construction Inc; Naran Construction; Deodat Sewkumarcharran Construction; and T Mohan Weeding, Cleaning & General Supply.
These companies have been awarded contracts to the tune of $334,599,720.
During this visit to the community, Minister Indar met with representatives from the contracting companies, and directed each to the road they would be rehabilitating.
“You are getting little sun now. When you open up these roads, don’t have them open up long, and have people further upset with us. When you open up the road, make sure you have your material, roll and compact your material, get the thing done quick,” he told the contractors.
Further, he highlighted that his Government has been going around the country embarking on several infrastructural works that have never before been seen in Guyana’s history. These projects are part of the $15.2 billion allocated in the 2022 budget for construction and rehabilitation of urban and community roads across the country.
