CONCACAF Road to W Gold Cup: Lady Jags face Suriname today

Head Coach Omar Khan has his sights set on securing his second victory with a formidable 23-member Lady Jags team currently preparing to face Suriname in a crucial CONCACAF W Gold Cup match today, October 25.
Midfielders Jalade Trim, Brianne Desa and Otesha Charles who scored exhilarating goals in the 5-1 victory over Dominica on September 24 are back on the team for the Wednesday match in the Dr IR Franklin Essed Stadium in Paramaribo, Suriname.
Khan has also added ten new players to the roster: Aneesa O’Brien, Sydney Cummings, Briana DeSouza, Anika Sproxton, Glengie Lewis, Justine Rodrigues, Shanice Alfred, Glendy Lewis, Shanic Thornhill and Neema Liverpool.
The Lady Jags are presently in Suriname training with Khan, who shared, “They are ready. We are ready as staff. Everybody is excited, excited to meet again after the first window, excited to play two matches and get enough points to face the third window with enough confidence.”
He added that he is “getting to know some new players and work on our strategy to face Suriname. We’ve watched some videos, so we know what we can expect from their team, and we will try to surprise them with our plan.”

The Lady Jags will be in back-to-back encounters against Suriname, starting today

The selected team has three goalkeepers, six defenders, ten midfielders, and four forwards to take on the Suriname senior women’s national team in the highly anticipated match, scheduled to start at 6pm.
Goalkeepers: Chante Sandiford, Raven Edwards-Dowdall and Aneesa O’Brien.
Defenders: Sydney Cummings, Anya Tribune, Briana DeSouza, Anika Sproxton, Savanna Mondesir-Singh and Glengie Lewis.
Midfielders: Dylana Makarowski, Brianne Desa, Justine Rodrigues, Jalade Trim, Sandra Johnson, Hannah Baptiste, Masani Springer-Williams, Otesha Charles, Stefanie Kouzas and Samantha Banfield.
Forwards: Shanice Alfred, Glendy Lewis, Shanic Thornhill and Neema Liverpool.
“We firmly believe that the team has the required skills to secure a resounding victory against Suriname. The Lady Jags’ cohesion and unity are unquestionable, and we encourage all Guyanese to support them as they proudly represent our nation in this prestigious regional tournament,” noted the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) President Wayne Forde.
The Guyanese squad will rest for a few days after their first game, and will return to the Dr IR Franklin Essed Stadium to face Suriname for a second time on October 29 at 4 pm.
The Lady Jags opened their Road to CONCACAF W Gold Cup campaign with a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Antigua and Barbuda on September 20. But the team bounced back in the second match to dominate Dominica and secure their first three points in Group A in League B.
Guyana is grouped with Antigua and Barbuda, Suriname and Dominica. The first- place finishers from each League B group, totalling three teams, will advance to the 2024 W Gold Cup Prelims.
The Road to CONCACAF W Gold Cup has 34 registered senior women’s national teams. It is the qualifying tournament for the highly anticipated 2024 W Gold Cup, the top-tier competition for senior footballers in the CONCACAF region.
With their previous success against Dominica, there is a sense of confidence and anticipation among the Lady Jags.
