After breathtaking individual and team performances in the last round of the current Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/3-Day League, the fifth round promises to be more scintillating with even more intense competition set to get underway on Friday.
Table leaders Essequibo, who stunned Georgetown in the last round to secure a thrilling three-wicket win compliments of Ricardo Adams’ 116*, will play Upper Corentyne at the Port Mourant Cricket Ground in Berbice, with the latter looking to make a statement, banking on the likes of Rajiv Ivan , Clinton Pestano and Shawn Perreira to deliver.
Over at the Wales Ground, Georgetown will do battle against number two ranked West Demerara in what should be a good encounter, especially with the Leon Johnson-led city team enduring a contrasting tournament so far. In-form players such as Johnson, who missed out on a ton after scoring 91 versus Essequibo, and young Akshaya Persaud, who slammed 151 not out for West Dem against Upper Corentyne, will be players to look out for.
East Coast, who lost their last match, will tackle Lower Corentyne at the Lusignan Ground in a battle of two sides who have tonnes of talent. The latter will rely heavily on in-form pacer Niall Smith, who will be entering this round fresh off a five-fer, which helped his team win the last match by 114 runs.
East Bank, who suffered a crushing loss at the hands of Lower Corentyne, will be seeking redemption when they square off against West Berbice, who managed to secure their first match of the competition last weekend.
All matches are expected to bowl off on Friday from 09:30h, with the exception of the East Coast-Lower Corentyne game, which starts on Saturday at 09:30h.
