Guyana brought its campaign at the South American Youth Games in Panama City, Panama, to a strong close on Saturday, highlighted by a record-breaking gold medal performance from Deuquan Farrell in the Men’s 200m final.
Farrell dominated the field to win in 21.18 seconds, setting a new meet record and eclipsing the previous mark established by Argentina’s Tomas Mondino in 2022. Ecuador’s Mateus Ledesma finished second in 21.24s, while Brazil’s Pedro Araujo took bronze in 21.74s. Guyana’s Gordon Thompson also impressed but just missed out on a podium spot, finishing fourth in 21.87s.

In the women’s 200m final, Angel Jeffrey narrowly missed a medal, placing fourth in 24.90s. Colombia’s Dayara Toppin secured bronze in 24.84 seconds, while Chile’s Roxana Rodriguez claimed gold in 24.10s and Argentina’s Olivia Conesa took silver in 24.33s.
Elsewhere, Nathaniel Samaroo endured a difficult outing in the shot put, finishing ninth with a best effort of 14.27 metres. Middle-distance runner Ebo McNeil delivered a determined performance in the men’s 3000m, finishing sixth in 9 minutes 15.44s. Colombia’s Juan Otero won the event in 8:57.55.
Guyana ended its athletics campaign on the podium, with the men’s 4x400m relay team securing bronze in 3:20.46s. Colombia captured gold in 3:16.39, while Chile finished second in 3:18.39.
Overall, Guyana placed 10th at the Games, finishing with a total of seven medals – three gold, one silver, and three bronze – capping a competitive showing at the regional event.
