Alleged half-million thief remanded

A Stabroek Market vendor who reportedly snatched a man’s haversack containing $500,000 on Monday appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to the charge.
Jermaine Fraser, of Lamaha Street, Georgetown, denied that he carried out the offence before city Magistrate Judy Latchman.
The 24-year-old allegedly robbed Parmadan Bharrat of one haversack valued $5000 which had the cash on January 16, 2018 at Robb and Water Streets, Georgetown.
Fraser reportedly used violence during the course of the robbery.
According to Prosecutor Arvin Moore, the vendor asked the Virtual Complainant (VC) to use his phone to make a call.
However, as the VC attempted to hand over the phone, he reportedly pushed him to the ground, grabbed the haversack and escaped.
He was later identified by Bharrat at the Stabroek Market area and the Police were summoned.
However, in court on Monday, the defendant claimed that the charge was laid against him as a result of a vendetta by a particular Policeman.
Magistrate Latchman refused Fraser bail and remanded him to prison until February 26, 2018 when he will next appear in court.
