Amelia’s Ward man on 50 hours’ community service for possession
Fifty hours community service was the sentence handed down to a South Amelia’s Ward, Linden resident on Tuesday, who pleaded guilty to having cannabis in his possession.

The defendant, James London, was caught by Police ranks with three grams of cannabis sativa on January 5, 2017 at South Amelia’s Ward.
The Prosecution’s facts on the matter, presented at the Linden Magistrates’ Court, indicated that on the said date, at approximately 21:45h, Police on mobile patrol saw the defendant in the area approaching from the opposite direction.
Upon observing the ranks, he began acting in a suspicious manner, which led to ranks to conduct a search on his person, which revealed a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis, hidden in his right-side back pocket.
He was then told of the offence and escorted to the Amelia’s Ward Police Outpost where the suspected cannabis was weighed in his presence and amounted to three grams. The defendant told ranks, “I just buy it from a man down the road.”
The man was arrested and subsequently released on bail, on his own recognizance, to attend court. However, the defendant failed to attend court and an arrest warrant was issued by presiding Magistrate Clive Nurse. Following the presentation of the facts on Tuesday, the defendant agreed with all that was stated, while he explained to the court that he has never been charged with any similar offences. The hours of community service are expected to be carried out from January 18 to 31. Failure by the defendant to attend will result in a default sentence of three months’ imprisonment at the Camp Street jail.
