A barge carrying about 8000 barrels of waste oil has been stabilised after it was observed listing while berthed at a private wharf on the East Bank of Demerara, the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) has said.

In a statement on Wednesday, the CDC said response operations were ongoing in collaboration with several agencies following the incident, with measures implemented to contain any potential oil spill and protect the environment.
Containment booms were deployed around the vessel as a precautionary measure to restrict the movement of any oil, while corrective measures were taken to stabilise it.
According to the CDC, the vessel is now upright and stabilised, with its cargo intact.
The commission said the relevant authorities continue to assess and monitor the situation, while response personnel and resources remain mobilised to support containment, recovery, and environmental protection efforts.
The response involves the CDC, Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Guyana Energy Agency (GEA), Guyana Fire Service (GFS), the Ministry of Agriculture’s Fisheries Department and the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard.
The CDC said the situation remains stable and under control, with coordinated response operations continuing.
The commission added that it would continue working with its partner agencies to manage the incident and implement measures to protect the environment and public safety.
