The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) has warned miners and other stakeholders against selling or purporting to sell mining lands, reminding tenure holders that such transactions may breach the laws and regulations governing the mining sector.

On Wednesday, the Commission said mining lands are granted to individuals and entities for mining activities, subject to the applicable laws, regulations and conditions attached to the relevant mining tenure.
The GGMC also cautioned against using irrevocable powers of attorney in transactions involving mining properties, stating that such documents do not, in themselves, constitute acceptable proof of ownership or lawful tenure.
Persons seeking to acquire or invest in mining properties have been urged to verify their legal status directly with the Commission before entering into agreements or making financial commitments.
Acknowledging that some mining properties may require additional investment, technical expertise or financial resources for development, the GGMC encouraged miners and tenure holders to consider lawful joint venture arrangements with suitable partners.
According to the Commission, such arrangements can support the development and productive use of mining properties while ensuring compliance with the applicable legal requirements.
The GGMC further stated that compliance and enforcement exercises will continue across all mining districts as part of its mandate to ensure that mining activities are conducted in an orderly and lawful manner.
Persons found in breach of mining legislation will face enforcement action, including prosecution where warranted. The Commission added that deportation proceedings would be pursued against non-nationals where applicable under Guyana’s laws.
GGMC on Wednesday also reminded miners of their legal obligation to sell all gold produced to the Guyana Gold Board, licensed gold traders or dealers.
The Commission said compliance with this requirement is compulsory and necessary to maintain transparency, accountability and integrity within the mining industry.
