A man, who was jointly charged with another in May for larceny, was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment after he changed his initial not guilty plea to guilty.
Compton Fernandes, 47, of Mocha, East Bank Demerara (EBD), appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Wednesday where he admitted to a breaking and entering charge.
The charge stated that Fernandes and Latchman Sukham, 43, of Albouystown, Georgetown, on May 20 and 21, 2019, at Albouystown, Georgetown, broke and entered the shop of Shanelle Prince and stole two gas bottles valued $17,000 and one Samsung music set speaker valued $96,000.
The prosecution contended that a relative of the owner was passing the business establishment when he noticed that the shop was opened. Upon checking, the two men were discovered in the shop and an alarm was raised. Fernandes and Sukham were both arrested.
Magistrate McGusty had remanded the two men to prison but the men provided incorrect addresses to the police.
However, Sukham is still on remand for the offence.
