Beacons surge to top of BFA Senior League standings

Agatash United FC, as newcomers to the Bartica Football Association (BFA), squandered their chances to make their mark on the points table when they went down 2 -1 to powerhouse Beacons FC on Friday last, as the BFA Senior League continued at the Bartica Secondary School Ground.
For Beacons, it was never going to be an easy task, despite being the in-form team and having only one loss to their name.
The potential underdogs Agatash have caused carnage in each of their matchups, defeating many of the top teams in the competition. But Agatash United’s loss was just enough for Beacons to launch themselves to the top of the league with 12 points from five games, their only blemish being a loss to Potaro Strikers in their opening game.

Beacons’ goalscorers, Whitney Welcome and Shameer Mentore

But on a hot afternoon, facing a young and promising Agatash United, Beacons overcame several scares to lift maximum points by way of goals off the boots of Whitney Welcome and Shameer Mentore.
Play for the first few minutes was back and forth, until Mentore opened the scoring for Beacons in the 21st minute. A few minutes later, Cleveland Collison responded at the other end of the field to level the score for Agatash United. A hard-fought battle ensued to the end, but Beacons’ experienced striker Welcome struck it home for his team in the 60th minute.
Play in the league will continue today, April 8, with River’s View FC (positioned at second place) coming up against Wolves United FC; and on Tuesday, April 9, Lazio FC takes on Agatash United FC.
