Two individuals were taken into custody on Friday following the discovery of over 45 kilograms (kg) of cocaine and an illegal firearm during an operation conducted by the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) in Berbice. According to reports, agents acting on information received conducted an intelligence-led operation at a property in Springlands, Corriverton, Berbice, which resulted in the seizure of the cocaine and the discovery of an illegal firearm with ammunition.
CANU stated that 40 brick-like parcels containing a whitish substance suspected to be cocaine were found in two cardboard boxes. The substance was subsequently tested positive for cocaine. A subsequent search led to the discovery of an EKOL ASI UZI firearm fitted with a magazine containing a quantity of ammunition. The two individuals who were on the premises at the time of the operation were arrested and escorted to CANU Headquarters along with the narcotics and firearm.

The narcotics were weighed subsequently and amounted to 45.644 kg (approximately 100 pounds) and carry a street value of $50 million locally and almost €1.575 million in the European market since preliminary investigations indicate that the shipment was destined for Europe. The seizure highlights CANU’s continued commitment to disrupting transnational narcotics trafficking networks, intercepting illicit drug shipments destined for international markets and removing illegal firearms from communities.
CANU further reiterates that intelligence-led operations and regional cooperation remain critical in safeguarding Guyana’s borders and national security.
