Berbice man busted with ecstasy remanded to prison

Thirty-three-year-old Ghanesh Sammy of Line Path Skeldon, Corriverton Berbice, who was busted with a quantity of ecstasy at Mahaica, ECD, was on Thursday remanded to prison after he appeared before Magistrate Melissa Mittelholzer at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court and pleaded not guilty to the trafficking in narcotics charge when it was read to him.

Particulars of the charge Sammy faces stated that on August 23, 2021, at Helena #2 Public Road, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD), he had 38 grams of methamphetamine (ecstasy) in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
As such, he was refused bail, and will make his next court appearance on September 24, 2021 at the Mahaica Magistrate’s Court.
It was reported that on Monday last, during a roadblock exercise in Helena, Police intercepted a motor car bearing registration number HC 8851 with the driver and four passengers.

The ecstasy tablets found in possession of the accused

During that interception, a search was carried out on the said car, and a black plastic bag was unearthed in its trunk. Upon enquiry, the 33-year-old man claimed ownership of the bag.
A search was conducted on the bag, during which another black plastic bag was found hidden in a right-side shoe uncovered therein. Further inspection revealed a quantity of blue, green and yellow tablets suspected to be ecstasy.
The suspect was told of the offence committed, arrested, and taken to the Mahaica Police Station, where he was cautioned. During interrogation, he reportedly told Police that his son was diagnosed with cancer and he was doing “a lil hustle” to offset his son’s medical expenses.
