Berbice man seeks leave of appeal to challenge death sentence

A 25-year-old man who was on December 18, 2019, sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of 45-year-old Samantha Benjamin, a US-based Guyanese, has applied to the Court of Appeal seeking leave to appeal against his conviction and sentence.

Imran Ramsaywack, also known as “Kevin Jones” and “Coolie Boy” of Lot 7, Adelphi Village, East Canje, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), is seeking leave the appeal against the jury conviction and death sentence which was imposed by Justice Sandil Kissoon.
The time has elapsed for the filing of his appeal. As appeals are mandated to be filed within 14 days of there being a conviction in a case or a discharge/dismissal.

The State was represented by Prosecutors Abigail Gibbs and Mandel Moore, while Ramsaywack was represented by Attorney-at-Law Ravindra Mohabir.
The prosecution’s case contended that the now-convicted man murdered Benjamin at her Middle Walk, Buxton home, and dismembered her body. The dead woman’s body was discovered in the Atlantic Ocean along the Annandale foreshore, ECD, where it was found that her head, arms, and legs were missing.
Benjamin’s body parts were later pulled from the water after a search conducted by the Police. During the handing down of the death sentence, Justice Kissoon had told Ramsaywack that he was unfit to dwell among members of society. (G1)
