Berbice to be safe during Christmas period – Adonis

Between January and November 2016 there has been a 22 per cent decline in criminal activity in Berbice, Region 6 (East Berbice-Corentyne) compared with the same period in 2015. These statistics were revealed to reporters on Thursday as the police launched its Christmas policing programme.

The programme is geared towards making the community safe over the next two months.

Speaking at the launch of the programme in New Amsterdam, acting Divisional Commander, Senior Superintendent Kevin Adonis said that from November 15 to January 15, 2017, the Region will see an increase in business activities.

“We will be seeing an increase in traffic both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Our aim is to minimise the occurrence of criminal activities and traffic accidents and traffic congestion,” he told the media.

Detailing the programme, Adonis said ranks will monitor the banking areas at Rosignol, New Amsterdam, Rose Hall Town, Port Mourant and Corriverton at scheduled times; New Amsterdam – Mondays to Saturdays, Rose Hall Town – Mondays to Fridays, Port Mourant – Fridays and Saturdays, Corriverton – Mondays to Fridays and Rosignol – Mondays to Fridays.

Police mobile and foot patrols will also be operating both day and night, in both the housing and business areas.

During the two-month period, marine patrols will also be conducted when necessary in the Berbice River and Canje Creek: “Based on intelligence provided and when necessary the following exercises will be conducted – snap road blocks, stop and search and narcotics searches. We will be making special arrangements for Christmas Eve Night in Rosignol, New Amsterdam, Rose Hall Town and Springlands.”

The Division’s capacity will be boosted with the use of a lorry, two minibusses, one van, twelve pick-ups, five cars, 22 motorbikes and two boats.
