Berbice’s St Therese’s emerge as Future Warriors champions

New Amsterdam’s St Therese’s Primary School produced a commanding display to capture the Champion of Champions title in the ExxonMobil Guyana-powered Future Warriors Tapeball Tournament for Primary Schools, defeating Essequibo champions Charity Primary by six wickets at the Everest Cricket Club on Saturday.
Set a target of 79 from their allotted eight overs, St Therese’s raced to 81 for four in just 7.2 overs, with Justin Southwell and Melroy Grant leading the successful run chase.
Southwell continued his impressive tournament with a blistering 35 from just 17 deliveries, while Grant finished unbeaten on 19 from 10 balls to seal the Berbice school’s memorable victory.
Charity’s Ravaldo Campbell was the most successful bowler, claiming two for 14 from his two overs, but could do little to stem St Therese’s attacking approach.
Earlier, Charity appeared destined for a modest total after collapsing to 17 for seven in 3.1 overs.

St Therese’s opening bowlers Elijah Bhandan and Jaden Lewis wreaked havoc on the Essequibo champions, with Bhandan claiming three for 12 and Lewis two for 21 as Charity’s top order crumbled.
However, Adon Holmes produced a remarkable counter-attacking innings to transform the contest. The charity batsman smashed an unbeaten 47 from just 16 deliveries, including six sixes and two fours, to propel his side to 78 for seven from their eight overs.
Despite Charity’s defeat in the final, Holmes was rewarded for his outstanding campaign by claiming the tournament’s Most Runs award with 68 runs.
Bhandan enjoyed an equally impressive all-round campaign and was named both Most Valuable Player and leading wicket-taker after finishing the tournament with three wickets and 23 runs.
St Therese’s triumph sees them join Huis T’ Dieren Primary, champions in 2024, and Cropper Primary, winners in 2025, on the honour roll.
The Berbice champions added further gloss to their memorable day by recording a notable victory over the Guyana Amazon Warriors in a novelty match.

Their march to the title began in emphatic fashion in Match One, when St Therese’s defeated West Ruimveldt Primary by seven wickets.
After restricting West Ruimveldt to 46 for seven from their eight overs, with Melroy Grant taking two for nine and Lomar Williams two for 10, St Therese’s reached 49 for three in just 4.1 overs.
Southwell once again led the way, remaining unbeaten on 23, while Bhandan chipped in with 17. Ceon Rajkumar’s 16 was the main contribution for West Ruimveldt.
Charity Primary secured their place in the final in Match Two after overcoming West Ruimveldt.
Charity posted 66 for six from their eight overs, with Holmes unbeaten on 21 and Campbell adding 13. West Ruimveldt’s Vincent Farley, with two for five, and Steven Orie, with two for 27, were among the wickets.
Despite giving away 24 extras, Charity defended their total effectively, with Troy Boston claiming two for 12 as West Ruimveldt were restricted to 54 for four at the end of their eight overs.
St Therese’s ultimately proved the most consistent side of the competition, combining disciplined bowling with aggressive batting to secure the Champion of Champions crown and bring the national title to New Amsterdam.
