Several young athletes and a Coach from Pouderoyen were honoured for their achievements and contributions to sport, during a ceremony attended by Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar.
Among those receiving medals was 21-year-old Sandra Johnson, who represents both the Lady Jags and the Guyana Defence Force Football Club.
Seventeen-year-old David Williams was also recognised for his involvement in football and track and field, while footballers Asher McTyre, 14, and Jermaine Garrette, 16, were rewarded for their achievements in the sport.
Golden Jaguars U14 goalkeeper Coach Travis Bess, who is also from Pouderoyen, received recognition for his contribution to football and his work in developing young players.
During the ceremony, Indar encouraged the honourees to remain focused and not allow their circumstances to limit their ambitions.
“There is a first for everything and you can be the next international footballer from your community,” he told the young athletes.
Indar, who has political responsibility for Region Three, assured the honourees that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic Government, through the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, would continue supporting their development and the wider Pouderoyen community.
The activity was organised by Raymond Williams, Bobby Cush, Quacy Thomas, Adrian Giddens and NDC Chairman Balram as part of their efforts to celebrate local sporting talent and encourage the community’s emerging athletes.
