A 30-year-old mason was on Friday remanded to prison after appearing before Magistrate Shivani Lalaram, charged with breaking into a Bath Settlement boutique and stealing a quantity of items and cash. Jai Chamanlall of Bath Experiment, West Coast Berbice (WCB) appeared at the Weldaad Magistrate’s Court, where the charge was read to him. It is alleged that between May 8 and May 9, 2026, at Bath Settlement, WCB, Chamanlall broke into the boutique of Dhanmattie Sookhoo and stole a quantity of items, including watches, colognes, clothing, footwear, jewellery, gift sets, music boxes, solar-powered devices and $100,000 in cash.

Among the items stolen were 15 wristwatches valued at $210,000, 15 Kayak colognes worth $142,000, artificial jewellery valued at $150,000, seven pairs of sneakers valued at $56,000 and several pieces of clothing and gift items. The unrepresented defendant was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Garfield Edwards opposed bail, informing the court that investigations are still ongoing and that another person has allegedly been charged in connection with the same matter. Edwards told the court that some of the suspected stolen items were allegedly found in Chamanlall’s possession. The prosecutor further noted that Chamanlall is a repeat offender who had previously been charged with a similar break-and-enter offence and was granted bail but failed to return to court, resulting in his arrest. According to Edwards, there was concern that if granted bail, the defendant would again fail to appear before the court.
Magistrate Lalaram denied bail and remanded Chamanlall to prison. The case will continue on June 3 at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court.
